On 20-28 March, 2024 in the quiet and beautiful town of Arnhem, Netherlands, a very special journey took place. A group of young people from different corners of Europe came together for a project called "In The Process of Becoming Myself." While our organization was not an official partner for this specific exchange, our members were selected to proudly represent France, bringing our local perspective to this international stage. This was an eight-day adventure into the most important subject we will ever study: ourselves.

When we are young, the world is constantly telling us who we should be. Our parents have expectations, our teachers have goals for us, and social media shows us a "perfect" life that doesn't actually exist. This project was designed to help us pause, take a breath, and find our own voices in the middle of all that noise.

Starting from Within: Understanding Our Past

The first few days were all about looking backward to understand the present. We didn't just talk; we used creative "non-formal" ways to map out our lives. We looked at our personal histories, the happy moments, the challenges, and the people who influenced us.

We learned that our identity is like a puzzle. Some pieces were given to us by our culture or our families, and some pieces we found ourselves. By naming our emotions and identifying our core values, we started to see which parts of our "identity puzzle" truly belonged to us and which parts were just things we were told to believe.

Breaking Free from the "Social Mirror"

Once we understood our inner selves, we turned our focus outward. We looked at the "Social Mirror", the way society reflects an image back at us. This was a very emotional part of the week. We talked openly about the pressure to look a certain way or act a certain way because of what we see on Instagram or TikTok.

We engaged in "de-labeling" exercises. We realized that many of the labels we carry, like "the shy one," "the smart one," or "the failure", are just words other people used to describe us. By discussing these labels in a safe, international group, we discovered that young people in Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Turkiye, Croatia, Italy, and France all feel the same pressures. This realization made us feel less alone and much stronger.

Designing the Future: Tools for the Real World

The final part of our stay in Arnhem was the most practical. It’s one thing to feel confident in a safe group, but it’s another thing to stay confident when you go back to real life. We spent our last days building a "Personal Toolkit."

We practiced skills that will help us forever:

Self-Care Habits: Learning how to calm our minds when we feel overwhelmed or stressed.

Effective Communication: Learning how to say "no" when something doesn't align with our values and how to speak our truth clearly.

Goal Setting: Each participant created a personal "Action Plan." This wasn't a list of chores, but a map of small, reachable steps to help us keep growing over the next year.

The Power of Connection

Perhaps the most beautiful part of the project happened on the very last day. During an activity called "This is Not Goodbye," every participant had a large piece of paper on the wall. Throughout the afternoon, everyone else walked around and wrote down the strengths and beauty they saw in that person.

When we read our papers, we didn't just see our own names; we saw a reflection of ourselves through the eyes of friends who truly cared. Those papers traveled back to France and other countries as physical proof that we are valued exactly as we are.

The process of "becoming" doesn't have a finish line. It is a lifelong path. Our participants left The Netherlands with a lighter heart, a clearer mind, and the knowledge that they have the power to write their own stories.
